Who we are

The goal of this scholarship is to enrich the lives of the recipients and those in their communities.

This scholarship was founded by Deb Kalina to honor her husband, Pat Benedict. Deb met Pat during her first month of teaching, bonding over their desire to contribute to their community. After Pat succumbed to cancer in 2023, Deb started this scholarship in honor of Pat to continue a legacy of empowerment.  Deb is a retired schoolteacher of 28 years - 23 in the Everett School District.

To manage the scholarship, interview applicants, and award the funds, Deb formed a young, 3-person committee.  Two of the current committee members are recent graduates of the Everett School District and Deb’s former students. A third member will graduate High School in 2026.  All are thoughtful people who care deeply about others and together they form a solid foundation for the future of this fund.

Everett’s iconic 1910 High School, an historically registered building, still stands in downtown Everett. It has had several restorations. Everett’s first High School opened in 1898
